Discharged No Warning Again in Sichuan; Severe Flooding Up To 2 Meters Deep, Waterlog

From the heavy rainfall that began on the night of August 6th, the water level in the tributaries of Fujiang River, Jialing River, and Qujiang River in Sichuan Province rose significantly. 10 rivers and 14 Hydrological stations exceeded warning levels, many reservoirs also exceeded their designed water levels.
From August 7th to 8th, there were heavy rainstorms in many areas in Qu County and Dazhu County. Many nearby reservoirs discharged water without warning at night, causing floods in at least dozens of local towns and villages, affecting around one million people. The most serious flooding was in the town of Sanban, where the city was flooded to a height of two meters, causing hundreds of local merchants to be swept away by the water, with heavy economic losses.

According to a report, waterlogging occurred in Yanfeng, Tuxi, and other towns in Qu County, and numerous stores and houses were flooded. Wanshou Street in Wanshou Town was flooded more than a meter deep overnight, and many homes along the street were soaked in water. Local residents said that the town’s terrain was not low, but it was still flooded because there is a lake near the town. The heavy rain caused the lake to overflow.

Dazhu County was also seriously impacted, with 31 towns affected, leading to flooding in towns and landslides blocking many roads. The video shows streets and houses being flooded, and people shouting "the streets are flooded entirely.” There were several people struggling in the flood, and many cars were submerged.

According to Chinese media reports, as of the evening of August 8th, more than 440,000 people in 119 villages of 6 cities and 13 counties were affected in Sichuan Province, resulting in a direct economic loss of 38.5 million US Dollars. It is said that over 80,000 people have been transferred, and no one has been reported dead or missing due to floods. On the 8th, several trains and flights in Dazhou were forced to suspend operations.

The disasters in Sichuan caused by flash floods are extensive. In the basin around the mountainous areas and the Panxi region flash floods and mudslides often occur suddenly and concurrently, which can easily lead to river diversions and makes prevention difficult.

Among the 7,000 small reservoirs and 1,400 dangerous reservoirs in the province, some of the reservoirs are over-aged and operate with malfunctions, so their ability to prevent extreme rainstorms is poor, which affects flood safety. After the CCP seized power, it called for "conquering and transforming nature", with the slogan
"Let the mountains lower their heads and make the rivers give way".
