No Atheists
In A Foxhole

Rudyard Kipling

" ā€œWhen you're left wounded on
Afganistan's plains and

the women come out to cut up what remains,
Just roll to your rifle

and blow out your brains,
And go to your God like a soldierā€
General Douglas MacArthur

" ā€œWe are not retreating. We are advancing in another direction.ā€

ā€œIt is fatal to enter any war without the will to win it.ā€
ā€œOld soldiers never die; they just fade away.
ā€œThe soldier, above all other people, prays for peace,
for he must suffer and be the deepest wounds and scars of war.ā€
ā€œMay God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't .ā€
ā€œThe object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his.

ā€œNobody ever defended, there is only attack and attack and attack some more.
ā€œIt is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died.
Rather we should thank God that such men lived.
The Soldier stood and faced God
Which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining
Just as bright as his brass
"Step forward you Soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't
Because those of us who carry guns
Can't always be a saint."
I've had to work on Sundays
And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep,
The Soldier squared his shoulders and said
And I never passed a cry for help
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, you Soldier,
You've borne your burden well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

Our Stuff Stolen During The Commando Orientation At Betutu Laut At Special Warfare Training Center
Saturday, August 10, 2024

After this exercise we returned to Sg Udang, before we went for that exercise, we stored all our belongings in our lecture shed, an improvised attic between the zinc roof and the lecture hall below.

All our stuff that we did not use for the duration of the course was stored above ground in a kitbag, in full view of everyone. Never expecting anyone in Commando school to pilfer our stuff. Guess integrity was sorely lacking. After this we were allowed to take a day off, as it was a Sunday.

Normally on a Sunday, I would head out to town to Malacca Inn, which had a dark, dusty and dank pub. I wonder if it is still in existence, gulping down 6 mugs of draft beer and one whole roast chicken. In the morning I took down the kit bag, after doing all the 4Sā€™s (shit, shave, shower and shake not necessarily in that order).

To check what I should wear out, for my day of inebriation. I brought down my kitbag; I found that the tiny padlock I had fixed was snipped away. Hurriedly I opened the kitbag, in it I found that my black walking out shoes were missing, all my shirts and all my long pants, with the exception of a collarless yellow t-shirt, frayed and much thrashed slacks. All the officers too came to check on their kitbags. They too were screwed.

I decided I would still go out and that no one was going to stop me. For shoes I was going to wear the light ā€œKung Fuā€ shoes. This ā€œKung Fuā€ shoes was standard in our packs for leaving tracks and not combat boot tracks. So as to show no traces of the military presence.  Disavowing of our presence in an operational area. I did not not dwell too long on my misery and dressed up and walked out of Special Warfare Training Center.

The mood I was in, I doubt anyone would have the ability to stop me from going out. With these I strode out of that nightmarish place. At the guard house I was hailed by the Regimental Police. They just needed to be dressed down. A Corporal shouted at me saying, ā€œYou are improperly dressed, you cannot go out like that, all are bound by dress regulations!ā€

I replied very loudly, ā€œIf you Commandos were honest with integrity I would be dressed very well indeed. You are bunch of thieves and and dishonest bastards.ā€ I guess the Commando Corporal nearly went into apoplectic fit . They called the orderly Corporal on duty at where we were training.  Saw the acknowledgement and shake of heads.

I was let loose. I had a good time and came back late in the evening. There was a call for us to assemble. We were led to a Commando barracks; there were some of the candidates who were waiting for their basic Commando course. All were standing stiffly beside their beds. On the beds were all of our stolen items.

The qualified Commandos, who had earned their Green Berets started trashing them with kicks and blows, uncontrolled blows were being rained down on them. Some were already bleeding there was no mercy shown. Finally one of the Officer trainee's called out for them to stop.

The rest of us Officer Trainees backed him. We told them the way that they were being kicked could result in internal injuries and death. They could be charged for murder. We were the witnesses. That stopped them.
