No Atheists
In A Foxhole

Rudyard Kipling

" “When you're left wounded on
Afganistan's plains and

the women come out to cut up what remains,
Just roll to your rifle

and blow out your brains,
And go to your God like a soldier”
General Douglas MacArthur

" “We are not retreating. We are advancing in another direction.”

“It is fatal to enter any war without the will to win it.”
“Old soldiers never die; they just fade away.
“The soldier, above all other people, prays for peace,
for he must suffer and be the deepest wounds and scars of war.”
“May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't .”
“The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his.

“Nobody ever defended, there is only attack and attack and attack some more.
“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died.
Rather we should thank God that such men lived.
The Soldier stood and faced God
Which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining
Just as bright as his brass
"Step forward you Soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't
Because those of us who carry guns
Can't always be a saint."
I've had to work on Sundays
And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep,
The Soldier squared his shoulders and said
And I never passed a cry for help
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, you Soldier,
You've borne your burden well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

After victory over dam and loggers, Orang Asli activist takes on Putrajaya By Aidila Razak
Sunday, April 16, 2023

Malaysiakini : MALAYSIANSKINI | The Orang Asli villagers of Kampung Pos Lanai in Kuala Lipis headed to the Temerloh High Court last Monday, as their civil action against Putrajaya and the Pahang government went to trial.

The villagers’ action is against what they deem to be the federal and state governments’ encroachment on their land. “Today we have emboldened ourselves to testify in court,” said Pos Lanai Orang Asli Land and Territories Action Committee chairperson Jeffrey Hassan outside of the court.

This is not the 36-year-old’s first rodeo.

In 2019, under Jeffrey’s leadership, the community won their battle against the Telom Dam, when the Pakatan Harapan government scrapped the project, which threatened to send their village underwater. This was after the community won an injunction against the dam and amid the Cameron Highlands by-election campaigning period. It was also after Jeffrey sent a memorandum of protest to then minister Yeo Bee Yin.

Since then, the community has driven away illegal loggers and prospectors, and recently steeled themselves for another fight against what could be a rare earth mine the size of 924 football fields in their midst.

In 2020, between Covid-19 lockdowns, Malaysiakini visited Pos Lanai to report on deforestation-linked human-elephant conflicts, which led to food shortages in the village during the period.    There, the portal also sat down with Jeffrey to speak about his David v Goliath story of fighting against the Telom Dam and the subsequent encroachments into the community.

The interview is published today, in light of Pos Lanai’s civil case. This is Jeffrey’s story in his own words (edited for clarity, brevity and flow).

I WAS 25, living and working in Kuala Lipis in 2012 when I heard that a dam was going to be built near my village, Pos Lanai. I wanted to help my community so I returned to the village to get involved in any resistance.

I COULD NOT REFUSE when the community appointed me chairperson of the working committee, because in our village, we have others who have higher education, and some work for the government, but none of them stands by the community. It is always the community who is forward in defending their rights.

BEFORE WE KNEW ABOUT THE DAM, there was a resettlement project. The school was also moved to Kampung Pantos. Many villagers moved because they had school-going children.

The villagers were told they could move back and forth between there and the old village to collect their harvest and so on. So the villagers saw the new homes as transit homes. But after they moved, they found out about the plans to build a dam.

Located in the Ulu Jelai Forest Reserve, Kampung Pos Lanai is accessible by boat.

TO ME, THE RESETTLEMENT PROCESS WAS A RUSE. We learnt about the dam through a confidential letter, which some friends in government agencies shared with us. The relevant authorities were not transparent. They never engaged the community about this dam project but were planning it under wraps.

Fools seldom differ : Rightfully orang asli are the sons of the soils, give whatever that’s due to them. They have been exploited since one can remember. Anwar, please look into the plight of them. They are more than a brother to us. They are the sons of this soil we live in.

LoveMyCountry : Unity Govt should follow Australian govt and recognise them as Natives... as First Nation People and give them their land & rights back.
