No Atheists
In A Foxhole

Rudyard Kipling

" “When you're left wounded on
Afganistan's plains and

the women come out to cut up what remains,
Just roll to your rifle

and blow out your brains,
And go to your God like a soldier”
General Douglas MacArthur

" “We are not retreating. We are advancing in another direction.”

“It is fatal to enter any war without the will to win it.”
“Old soldiers never die; they just fade away.
“The soldier, above all other people, prays for peace,
for he must suffer and be the deepest wounds and scars of war.”
“May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't .”
“The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his.

“Nobody ever defended, there is only attack and attack and attack some more.
“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died.
Rather we should thank God that such men lived.
The Soldier stood and faced God
Which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining
Just as bright as his brass
"Step forward you Soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't
Because those of us who carry guns
Can't always be a saint."
I've had to work on Sundays
And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep,
The Soldier squared his shoulders and said
And I never passed a cry for help
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, you Soldier,
You've borne your burden well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

Anwar made me believe in something By James Chai
Saturday, November 26, 2022

Malaysiakini : COMMENT | “Go listen to Anwar (Ibrahim) speak at a ceramah, and I guarantee you’ll be convinced,” my friend told me almost 10 years ago.

Even in a crowd of hundreds of thousands, Anwar has the magical ability to make you feel like he’s speaking directly to you. Whether to students about the plight of rural-poor Malays in Baling, first-time protesters in Kuala Lumpur when he first uttered the transformative words of “reformasi”, or the roaring crowd at the Black 505 rally who felt the elections were stolen from them.

Unscripted and off-the-cuff, laced with humour and anger, Anwar tells you a story of the inequality between the haves and have-nots, and he makes you care for the country you longed to love.  For all his inadequacies, Anwar’s care for the disenfranchised is consistent and sincere. He had legions of supporters who would go out of the way for him, even at personal cost.

He was popular and well-liked, certain of being prime minister in 2013. Surely, I felt, no government would be so foolish to jail him for a nearly identical charge of sodomy as in 1998.

Proarte : But what did Anwar make you believe in James? Did he make you believe in notion of equality of each citizen? Did he make you believe in Secularism as envisaged by our founding fathers?

Did he make you believe that you were "Bumiputera" by virtue of being a citizen and being born in Malaysia despite being of Chinese ancestry. Did Anwar make you believe in meritocracy so that your talent would not be sidelined because of your race without you having to go to UK for your education.

Did Anwar make you believe in Malaysia such that you would want to do you research in one of our research Institutes as opposed to one from Singapore where you are based currently? Anwar certainly has the talent for making people wanting to believe in something but he also has the talent for wanting to make people turn against him or lose faith in him.

Anwar owes his premiership to the non-Malays, namely the Chinese who voted for him because there was frankly no other alternative. Anwar inexplicably keeps reminding us Malaysians that he will not "compromise" on Malay as the national language, or the "special position" of the Malays and their "privileges" and upholding the Malay Monarchy.

Anwar continued to play the Islamic card to the hilt in the GE 15 but it did not stop his Malay support from dwindling to an all time low of 11%. How could a non-Malay feel comfortable hearing Anwar's frankly divisive, insensitive and racist innuendos as if the non-Malays ( who else could he mean ) are wanting to threaten the above and that he Anwar will never compromise on letting that happen.

The question remains, why does Anwar play the hurtful Islamic and racial card all the time? He ceramahs are laced with Islamic propaganda which franking is disrespectful when addressing a multi-religious crowd. His Islamic quotes in Arabic which no one understands is totally out of order when addressing the public who have come to listen to how he can improve their lives and create a just society not a man who is trying to portray himself as a learned pious Muslim.

Anwar introduced the policy of "Islamisation" in the 1980s and 90s in the Civil Service which was disturbing and divisive not to mention against the secular spirit of our Constitution. Amongst other things it put pressure on Malay women to wear the tudung creating a sense of uneasiness within the Muslim community and Islamic judgmentalism which has become a part of our political culture.

All of this played into PAS hands and it gradually dictated the Islamic agenda causing UMNO and PAS to be in competition to out Islamise each other. The rest is history leaving UMNO now from its dominant role in Malay politics to a minor one with PAS claiming the Islamic crown and having majority Malay support. Anwar has to take responsibility for having a not inconsequential role in this outcome.
