Malaysiakini: The fate of primary school teacher Mohd Fadli Mohamed Salleh will be
discussed at the Education Support Services Disciplinary Council today. The council is reported to be deliberating whether Fadli (above) will be sacked or demoted, after the teacher responded to the council's show-cause letter. The
teacher had on Sept 22 received a letter from the Education Ministry
stating he had breached civil service conduct, through his postings on
Facebook, and could face a demotion or sacking.
The show cause
letter has prompted public outcry, with many parents saying they agree
with the teacher's criticism of the national education syllabus.
Comparing with developed nations
What did Cikgu Fadli say? On
Nov 15 last year, he uploaded a posting answering a question on whether
the national syllabus is suitable, given the current needs, class
capacity and school facilities.
He said it is unfair to just
compare the syllabus, without considering the facilities, capacity and
time allocated for teaching a subject in national schools. Some classes in national schools have up to 50 students - double that
of classes in countries like Sweden and Finland - and this has an
impact on how teachers teach and students learn, he said.
"In China, 15 hours a week is used to teach mathematics. In Malaysia, it is only two hours and 30 minutes.
Vijay47 : It must be comforting for all when from the midst of a jungle populated with hyenas, jackals, and baboons, there emerges a lone tiger who refuses to accept a lost cause and strives to introduce a better system to those under his care.
Reading Mohd Fadli Salleh’s postings, there is not a single word or phrase that could be said to be offensive even if he did not write in the sycophantic style demanded of minions when they communicate with masters.
Mohd Fadli Salleh was merely calling a spade a cangkul. For that he is being treated as though he abused royalty or sold LCS secrets to an amused enemy.
He cannot be faulted with failing to follow procedure either – he did write to senior officials, numerous times, but nobody bothered to respond. Confirming that to Little Napoleons, it is below their lofty dignity to reply to a subordinate, a lowly primary school teacher.
After today’s meeting, we would be treated to the usual hypocritical drivel that it was a fruitful discussion and the Education Minister and Director General were impressed with the innovative ideas put forth by Mohd Fadli; they assured parents and students that all measures would be taken to improve the high 350-PhD standards Malaysia already provides.
Yeah, sure.
It is unlikely they would win in the final lap, but I would propose Mohd Fadli Salleh and Fahmi Resa to be included as finalists in Malaysiakini’s Malaysian of the Year For 2022 Poll.
YellowGecko9040 : What did he do?
Simple answer: He told the hard bare truth…
This is also happening in many other Ministries including MoH.
The gap between administrators and the worker bee is shown in this scenario as it is in many other similar scenarios all over the country revolving around the same issue.
The administrators come out with grandiose ideas and plans that generally are not practical in real
Life. When this is pointed out, the worker bees are labelled as miscreants and people who go against the gomen of the day… instead of solving the problem….
And the cycle repeats itself, whilst everything else gets worse
Cogito Ergo Sum : You must not oppose but must support a policy however stupid or inappropriate it is. That’s the motto of the civil service for 65 years under Umno/BN. It’s an irony that the MoE does not promote intelligent teachers but instead either sacks or demotes them.
Every point he has made is valid and substantiated with logical reasons. This expose by Fadli concerns only one subject. There must be much more gaps in almost all subjects. Well, Cikgu Fadhli gets an A. The MoE gets an ‘F’ in all subjects.
Hmmmmmmmm : I thought initially that the Cikgu must have critcised the government or politician for him to be hauled up but after reading his posts here, I do not find anything offensive at all. Just some well thought - out points based on his experience as a teacher.
Instead of probing him, the ministry could do well to look into his postings and do something based on them. If what he said is true, I agree wholeheartedly that the BM syllabus is indeed way too heavy for a Primary One student.
OrangeTrout4329 : Cikgu Fadli deserves to hold a top position in the Education Ministry and be given the authority to rewrite the school syllabus for the primary schools.
I don't see anything seriously wrong with Cikgu Fadli's views and feedback but it would be a serious issue if the officials in our Education Ministry fail to understand and accept his views on the current education system.
In my opinion, Cikgu Fadli is not a fool to seek publicity for himself or degrade our Education Ministry but I strongly believe that he had no choice but to expose the reality to the public and share his views for the betterment of the young children's future.
OrangeKoala1303 : Is OK cikgu. Kena sack, you join PKR and run for Gombak seat. Got a useless MP there that needs replacing and I am sure voters like your courage.
GoldenPigeon0510 : He made valid points and good suggestions. He should be praised and some of his comments for teaching basic to the slow learners should be implemented .
Definitely no reprimands but be promoted!
Headhunter : If they demote or sack him, our education is more sicker than we thought. Here's a dedicated teacher who really cared for his profession and specialized subject by giving positive feedbacks and the little Napoleons bosses couldn't take the criticism because it reflects on their own failures.
Educators like him should be the one sittings in the planning office of the Education Ministry. The Education minister should intervene if he really care for our children education.
And promote the guy to a more important role.
Krabian : Now you know why our outdated education system is still stuck in the mud going nowhere.
We keep appointing useless, clueless and bias politician as MOE minister.
Freethinker : At least we still have a good educator who focus on real education. unlike MOE where syllabus created are not reflecting the need of world today.
hope we can have more educator like him.
Newday : The teacher has made some well reasoned comments and has also promoted ideas to improve the system. Problem for him is that it is via public forums rather than internally. Most likely he has raised these issues internally and got absolutely nowhere.
There lies the rub to improve our systems. Critiques from those in the know do not go down well with those at the top. Must obey and keep ideas to self. Such a great pity for our current and future school students and teachers that want to make a real difference.
Jarchin : Poor Fadli, his legitimate criticism of our screwed up education system on Facebook has brought down the wrath of the Authorities on him.
Alternatively the teacher who made sexist jokes and degrading comments to a classroom full of students not only gets away scott free but also receives funding to sue the victim. What a tragedy!
