Some in his camp went so far as to compare him to South African anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela. PKR president Anwar Ibrahim himself had spent more than 10 years behind bars on charges widely viewed to be politically motivated, and he felt that outlandish claims made by Najib and his family should not be entertained.

“If you follow my style, I just ignore these petty things. I heard some saying that he (Najib) is really suffering and Anwar got better treatment while in jail.  “Look, even under him, I’m not even talking about under (former prime minister) Mahathir (Mohamad), when I was placed on the floor for weeks before the doctors came and said, ‘look give him a proper bed for clinical reasons, for his back problem’.

The Port Dickson MP had three spells in detention totalling around 10 years, starting with 20 months under the now abolished Internal Security Act (ISA) in the 1970s, five years from 1999-2004 and three years from 2015-18. Hence, Anwar bristled at the suggestion that he enjoyed delays in his trial. “That's one and of course, food was prison food!” Anwar told Malaysiakini during an exclusive interview.

People don't sympathise with him is that he's not even make any apology or expressed regrets for all the wrongdoings he had done. Instead he acted like he's been wronged and all the money he and his family spent and stole are their entitlement.

Right from the beginning of his case, he and his lawyers were thumping their nose at the judiciary and treating it with disrespect. He thought he was still holding court and can't see that he was instead behaving like a jester. I say let him rot in prison.
