of sympathy and condemnation poured in from around the world after
former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was fatally shot while giving a
campaign speech in the western prefecture of Nara on Friday morning. He
was 67.
“It
cannot be denied that he had been one of the most important politicians
in Japanese history,” Tom Phuong Le, an associate professor of politics
at Pomona College, told VICE World News. “Much of the media will
describe him as a former prime minister but it is important to recognize
that he was still an active politician. He still had significant
influence on the party and Japanese politics.”
