Malaysiakini : Single mother Loh Siew Hong intends to challenge the unilateral
conversion to Islam of her three children through a judicial review,
said her lawyer Shamsher Singh Thind.
Vijay47 : Mr. Shamsher Singh, I shall keep this short. I have already written much these past few days and to write more would be too depressing. Pardon me if I seem to be intruding into your area of expertise, please bear it as the thoughts of a person hardly conversant in law.
My belief is that you need not ask for any proof of mythical conversion. Yes, it appears that children, even aged 11 and 7, can be kidnapped, made to recite some prayers, and lo and behold! they are Muslims! But the Federal Court has come out with a clear decision – such conversion, whether abetted by a criminal jailbird father or not does not matter. Both parents must consent, otherwise the so-called conversion never was.
Tomorrow, the two muftis, the entire Abim Board, and that scholar from Mumbai can come out with some document signed by Queen Elizabeth and counter-signed by the UN Secretary General, it would mean absolutely nothing. As lawyers say, ab initio an illegal act stays an illegal act. No piece of paper can change the fact that the three children were Hindus, they are Hindus, and will remain Hindus until the age of majority when they can choose whatever path they wish.
Just to digress a little as is my regrettable wont. Two weeks ago, Ismail Sabri was wailing and keening about an unfortunate Moroccan child who died in a well-accident. Nothing wrong with such display of grief. Yet when merciless treatment is meted out to a mother and her three children right under his nose, he seems to have nothing to comment or order.
Maybe that is why we must always remind ourselves that the president of Indonesia is Joko Widodo and the prime minister of Malaysia is Ismail Sabri. Read the 75 comments here.........
