Rudyard Kipling"
“When you're left wounded on Afganistan's plains and
the women come out to cut up what remains, Just roll to your rifle
and blow out your brains,
And go to your God like a soldier”
General Douglas MacArthur"
“We are not retreating. We are advancing in another direction.”
“It is fatal to enter any war without the will to win it.” “Old soldiers never die; they just fade away.
“The soldier, above all other people, prays for peace, for he must suffer and be the deepest wounds and scars of war.”
“May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't .” “The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his.
“Nobody ever defended, there is only attack and attack and attack some more.
“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.
The Soldier stood and faced God
Which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining
Just as bright as his brass
"Step forward you Soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't
Because those of us who carry guns
Can't always be a saint."
I've had to work on Sundays
And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep,
The Soldier squared his shoulders and said
And I never passed a cry for help
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, you Soldier,
You've borne your burden well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."
Moderation - Malaysia’s failed strategy - Commander S THAYAPARAN (Retired) Royal Malaysian Navy

Moderation or Suicidal
The Wakandan : I am commenting here because I thought the writer has it right that moderation does not work in Malaysian politic simply because its definition is only applied to race and religion.
In these areas, you are going to lose if you are moderate and not passionate, radical and extreme in their cause. The fella who has it more extreme gets the better over you. Thus the reason, put simply, why Harapan under Mahathir, is fighting an uphill battle against the onslaught of PAS-UMNO combo.
And just to be clear, PAS is the main player here; UMNO is just a sidekick being used for PAS greater purpose.
What Harapan has morphed into is a great disappointment to many supporters who wanted to really see a new Malaysia, freed from the shackle of racism, religious bigotry and corruption. Mahathir is only focusing on corruption, specifically in bringing Najib down. It is clear he has a personal axe to grind with Najib, but that’s okay considering what an idiot Najib was.
And here is the thing – Mahathir never said he was going to go soft on racism and religious bigotry. He merely said he wanted to get Najib jailed for being a theft, a kleptocrat. The reformers within Harapan actually are the ones that gave the impression of a new Malaysia – everyone to be treated equally at least in term of poverty and basic rights.
Mahathir was an extremist as we know he was. He was kicked out from UMNO by Tunku exactly because of that.
The reason why we accepted that Mahathir can be PM of the Harapan government because he said that he realised his past mistake. But when he got the PM post, cracks began to appear – Jakim was still there and so was BTN, his old legacy of religious and racial extremism.
Democratic politics is based on popular agenda and policy. Race and religion are popular. Trump won the American mind and dream because there are more American who wanted a great America that is not bogged down by poor immigrants and minorities, and allies.
In Malaysia, race and religion sell. They are wrong because extremism would mean at the expense of the right of others. In order to go around this, they come out with the ketuanan doctrine – race supremacy. There is no race supremacy in our Malaysian constitution. Eradication of poverty and illiteracy, yes, but not supremacy. People, however, like to equate affirmative action as race supremacy, and of course that sells.
Mahathir just could not get out of his old self.
Given space and time, he would revert to his old self. That’s why the more important aspect of Harapan agenda of putting food on the table, the economy, idiot, was overlooked as they want to compete with PAS on who are the more radical and extreme on the issue of race and religion.
Malaysiakini : "Moderation is like diet coke, decaffeinated coffee or
non-alcoholic beer. Healthier but it's so unauthentic. Who would want
this?" - Wong Chin Huat
COMMENT | I am glad political analyst Wong Chin Huat finally belled the cat. He makes three important points.
The first is that the Umno/PAS union should not be underestimated. The
second that new voters – especially young voters – are the wild cards,
and the most important third point, “moderation” is an ultimately
self-defeating strategy.
