Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan is taking legal action to stop one of Germany’s most powerful media executives from defending a comedian who performed a crude poem about the Turkish leader.
A lawyer representing Mr Erdogan said on Tuesday that a preliminary injunction had been filed in Cologne against Mathias Doepfner, chairman and chief executive of German media company Axel Springer SE.
The court order was aimed, he said, at stopping a “wave of insults” against Mr Erdogan inspired by a satirical poem performed by German comedian Jan Boehmermann last month.In the poem Mr Boehmermann suggested Mr Erdogan hits girls, watches child pornography and engages in bestiality.
In an open letter published in German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Mr Doepfner expressed solidarity with Mr Boehmermann, saying he had laughed out loud over the poem and "wholeheartedly" supported what the comedian had said.
Turkey's legal action is the latest in a series of cases brought against those who are deemed to have insulted Mr Erdogan, first at home and now in Germany.
