It was very embarrassing for the USA to face the fact that, without the assistance of the Malaysiansand the Pakistanis, the Americans would not have been able to extract their troops.It was doubly embarrassing that these forces had not been included in the information loop prior to the operation and that Americans died because of the consequent delay in dispatching the force.
Language and simple communication problems in the column proved critical. The two leading Malaysian armoured personnel carriers in the relief column that finally broke through made the wrong turn as a result of the American infantry platoon leader's inability to make himself understood to his Malaysian driver. Both vehicles were hit by multiple rocket-propelled grenades and destroyed; this resulted in the death of one Malaysian soldier and the wounding of two Americans.
